Sunday, 22 March 2009

2009 Australian Junior Track Championships, Adelaide Super-drome, 19-21 March.

Victoria has finished with four gold, three silver and three bronze medals from the 2009 Australian Junior Track Championships which concluded in Adelaide on Saturday.

Imogen Jelbart (Bendigo & District CC) claimed her second gold medal of the championships as she took the junior womens 17 title in straight heats over West Australia’s Monica Young.

Jelbart was victorious in Thursday’s time trial and has claimed five Australian junior track championship titles in just three years.

The Victorian trio of Jaron Gardiner (Ararat & Districts CC), Evan Hull (Ararat & Districts CC) and Luke Parker (Carnegie Caulfield CC) set an Australian record as they took gold in the an exciting junior mens team sprint final.

Their time of 49.497seconds was four tenths of second faster than the mark also set by Victoria's Howard, Wood and Griffiths (49.896) in Melbourne in 2005.

The New South Wales team of Jackson Law, Tirian McManus and Thomas Regan (49.733) also went under the old mark on their way in taking silver.

Later in the session, Gardiner, who also took gold in Thursday's time trial, easily accounted for Jesse Kerrison (QLD) in straight heats to take bronze in the junior mens 17 sprint.

In other events, Castlemaine CC's Brae Mapson finished fourth in the junior mens 15 sprint after being defeated by Travis Smedley (NSW) in the bronze medal final.
