BT BLADE cuts through to give 'Cyclones' maximum speed

Photos copyright Amy McCann @ CycleSport VictoriaCycling Australia today joined with company Bike Technologies Australia (BT) to unveil the BT BLADE, the latest bicycle for use by members of the Australian Track cycling team.

The launch, held at Darebin Velodrome in Thornbury, was attended by potential Beijing cyclists Anna Meares, Ryan Bayley, Mark Jamieson and Daniel Ellis.

The BT Blade will be ridden by Australia's track endurance cyclists in events including the individual and team pursuit and joins BT STEALTH currently in use by our sprint cyclists.

"An incredible amount of research, design, testing, experience and cost goes into the development of each BT Bicycle," said former Olympian and BT Australia Director Sal Sansonetti.

"We looked at each element of the frame and modelled the stresses and loads applied to it.

Photos copyright Amy McCann @ CycleSport Victoria"We then chose the best combination of carbon fibre grades and fibre orientation for each individual element.  Its the same basic approach used in the aero space industry," he added.

Cycling Australia Senior National Track Cycling Coach Martin barras says the relationship between the team and BT Australia ensures our cyclist line up with the most technologically advanced bikes available.

There is no doubt the final result comes down to the performances of each individual cyclist but in events where the result can be decided by a thousandth of a second, our team goes into every race confident they are riding the very best bike which gives them a psychological edge over their rivals," said Mr Barras.

BT Australia have supplied track bicycles to the Australian team for more than a decade and the company manufacturers the most advanced carbon fibre bicycles available in the world today.

Nezkot Engineering, the partner company of BT, provided the aerospace expertise for the development and design of tooling.

Photos copyright Amy McCann @ CycleSport VictoriaThrough the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling trio stimulate wind tunnels conditions, BT was able to develop optimal aerodynamic frame shapes.  All BT carbon frames are created using the company's Monocoque Method, the major factor contributing to a frame's performance.

The bike weighs just 6.8kg, with Vittoria tyres that have decreased weight and enhanced grip, responsiveness and overall speed, combined with a state of the art Mavic wheel.

"The result is a frame free of compromise and full of performance providing the Australian team with the ultimate advantage," Mr Sansonetti said.

Watch out for many of the cyclones tonight at Revolution 3.

Michelle King - Royal determination

Most 39 year old mother's of two would find it difficult to squeeze in the regular day to day activities of family life, including raising 2 kids under 18, plus managing their own personal lives.  Well try adding two 5 hour DISC velodrome sessions, a Carnegie velodrome session, 3 gym workouts and a Pilates session into the week above.

a new Australian record at the
Australia C'ships in Melbourne

www.erniesmithphoto.com.au

Well that's what Carnegie Caulfield Masters cyclists Michelle King has been doing for the past 6 months in training for the 13th UCI World Masters Track Cycling Championships, which begin in Sydney on the 15th.

Michelle, a former Australian Sprint Champion in the Elite category, has been hitting the boards hard at the velodrome in Thornbury in an attempt to erase memories of last year's World Track Championships, where she won two silvers in Manchester, coming second in both the Time Trial and Sprint to US cyclist Elizabeth Reap.

Disappointed with silver and hungry for success, Michelle bounced back at the 2007 Victorian Championships with 3 golds and an Australian record in the Time Trial.  And just for good measure, she did that all again at the Australian Masters Championships held in Melbourne, where she took out the Female Champion of Champions title after her 3 Golds - Time Trial, Sprint & Scratch Race, plus 2 Australian records in the Time Trial and Flying 200.

Michelle then topped off her great season by winning the Victorian Masters Female Cyclist of the Year at the CSV Awards Dinner in July.

But the fact that she came so agonisingly close to the World Record in the Time Trial, setting a time of 37.272, just .275 seconds outside the world record, sparked the intensive training sessions, which would bring most of her cycling peers half her age to their knees.

"The standard of Masters cycling, most significantly the times across the world have been improving every year and you have to work hard and be at your best to have a chance" she said.

So with the assistance of VIS coach Hilton Clarke and husband Darren, recently retired Manchester dual gold medallist and world record holder in the Time Trial, Michelle has worked herself into what she describes as 'stronger form' than her Nationals performance in March and is quietly confident of success in Sydney.

"I am a very different cyclist to Darren, in that I find it hard to be openly confident, and he has helped me to become more positive." she said.  "I know that I have put in the work here at DISC, which is easily the fastest track I have ridden on, and to have someone such as Hilton Clarke behind you is great"  she said.

Michelle King on the dias after winning silver at the
2006 World Track Championships.

Michelle has set her sights firmly on the Time Trial and the World Record she narrowly missed in March.  She will also look to go one better in the Sprint this time around and will also contest the scratch and points race at the latter end of the championships, where she will line up against 1996 Atlanta Olympic silver medallist and Victorian native Michelle Ferris (now living and working in Sydney), when they combine categories for the endurance events.

"Michelle has been back on her bike for a little while now and I will face her in the enduro events, which should be some fun for me and a real test given all the sprint work I have been doing.'" she exclaims. "But its great to see her back in cycling and she will do well at the Masters".

And what of her main competitors? Although Reap will not be in attendance, its not the physical competitors that Michelle is looking to beat.  Its herself.

"I am out for that World Record.  If I win gold, but don't get the World Record, yes, I will be disappointed." she stated.

"Its about a test of how fast I can go, not about who I can beat at these championships" she added. "I want that record."

So what after the Worlds are over?  Will it be another assault on the Victorian track scene?  "Look at this stage, I am not sure, but its hard with 2 young kids at 14 and 17, as they are at an age that they need their mother around more and with all the trainings and cycling in my life of late, its just hard for me to be there". she says.  "I guess we will wait and see whether I have that world record in my pocket."

Follow Michelle at the 13th UCI World Masters Track Cycling Championships, 16-21 October 2007 at the Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney here:
Official Website

Her date with destiny in the Time Trial will be on Tuesday 16th in the late afternoon.

For Immediate Release

A Revolution for Australian Track Cycling

Direct from four sell-out seasons in the UK, the Revolution arrives Downunder for two events only at Melbourne’s Vodafone Arena – two big nights of racing; world and Olympic champions; with a focus on finals style racing and a great night out.

Cotter Pin, the new promoter of track cycling in Victoria, today launched its event schedule for season 07/08.

Cotter Pin will promote four events across this track-racing season. In addition to the two Revolution events (November 24 and December 19) at Vodafone Arena, Cotter Pin will launch a new prestigious junior event, The Junior Austral Wheelrace, as well as presenting the 110th staging of its senior namesake, The Austral Wheelrace.

The Junior Austral will be held at DISC and feature a full program of J13 to J19 racing with the feature event, the Junior Austral, being open to J17 and J19 riders.

Event Director, Harry Hart, explains Cotter Pin’s goals. “Track cycling was a huge part of Melbourne’s sporting landscape back in the 40’s and 50’s when full-houses used to attend the famous outdoor wooden track at Olympic Park. We are excited to introduce the Revolution concept which has proven such a success in the UK as well as present events like the Austral that preserve the heritage of the sport.”

“Every Revolution event has been a sell out in the UK. Five years ago, the concept was able to breath new life back into the sport and create what is a very exciting sporting spectacle.”

The events are being aimed not just at core cycling fans but at Melbourne’s famous sports spectator, Hart explains, “When the World Championships were here in 2004 all the night sessions were a sell-out; the cycling at the Commonwealth Games last year was one of the first sports to sell-out. Melbourne still loves track cycling, it just wants the events to be world class – and that’s what we’re putting on. The best will be racing, so track is very much back in Melbourne!”

“It’s looking like the sprint and keirin at Revolution 1 will resemble a world cup level event for depth and quality,” says ex-pro David McKenzie, Cotter Pin’s Competition Director. “Ryan Bayley and Anna Meares are already confirmed for Revolution 1 and stand-by for confirmation of some more World and Olympic champions in coming days.”

Fellow Cotter Pin director, Clint McDonell, (runner up in last year’s Austral) comments that the Vodafone events have also been designed with hospitality in mind. “We have seen a real uptake of the sport amongst a more professional demographic and have created a track centre corporate hospitality package that puts you right in the middle of the action. We hope to sell up to 50 tables for the first event.”

Support for the first two events has been good, with the nab coming on board as a major sponsor as well as partnerships in place with 2XU – a dynamic cycling apparel brand – and The Swanston Hotel – which will accommodate all the athletes.

Cotter Pin is still in discussions with a number of institutions in regards to the Austral and Junior Austral events.

Tickets can be purchased from www.ticketek.com.au or by calling 132 849. Hospitality Packages can be purchased by contacting Lara at lara@facepartnership.com or calling 0405 445 686.

Press Release for CSV

Cotter Pin Release Summer Track Event Schedule

Cotter Pin Pty Ltd, the recent winner of the tender to promote Victoria’s premier track racing events, has released a finalised summer event schedule.

Revolution 1 – Saturday 24th November 2007, Vodafone Arena

Revolution 2 (including the final of the Melbourne Cup on Wheels) – Wednesday 19th December 2007, Vodafone Arena

The Junior Austral – Saturday 23rd February 2008, JCV

The 110th Austral Wheelrace – Saturday 15th March 2008, Vodafone Arena

The major change to the previously released provisional schedule is that the International Madison event proposed for JCV on 23rd February 2008 is being replaced with the inaugural Junior Austral.

Event Director, Harry Hart explains the change: “There were a couple of issues with the proposed International Madison event, mainly to do with the venue.  We feel excited to launch The Junior Austral which we expect to become a very prestigious junior trophy – like it’s senior namesake.”

The Junior Austral extends Cotter Pin’s support of junior track racing beyond its Future Stars series, which forms an integral part of it’s Revolution programs, and also looks to extend on the history and heritage of the famous Austral name.

David McKenzie, Cotter Pin’s Competition Director, adds “Our three elite events are coming together really well.  We feel the Junior Austral concept is a terrific opportunity for emerging riders.  Revolution 1, on November 24, promises multiple world and Olympic champions and has received terrific support from both Australia’s and many of the world’s best riders.”

Hart says corporate sponsors are getting behind the events as well, “We have already secured strong sponsor support from the likes of the nab, apparel brand 2XU and accommodation partner The Swanston Hotel.  More sponsors will be announced shortly.”

Clint McDonell, a partner in Cotter Pin and overseeing venue management, comments on the progress made with corporate hospitality, “We are taking the infield bar concept and extending it by offering tables right smack-bang in the middle of the action.  We are trying to offer something for everyone, by providing a family ticket (two adults & two kids) for $70, right up to an infield table for 10 with fine dining and all beverages for $1750.  There are even opportunities to go beyond this with Corporate Box availability and Track Taster sessions where you get to ride with some of the world’s best riders.”

La-ra Hinckeldeyn has joined the Cotter Pin team coming over from the UK where she has worked with Face Partnership for the past three-years helping to ensure their Revolution events are sell-outs.  “La-ra will be helping across the areas of PR, hospitality, sponsor management and just generally providing her experience from the UK events where needed”, McDonell informs.

The strong support from the riders and from corporate sponsors is also matched with a terrific response to Cotter Pin’s call for volunteers.  “All major positions have been filled.  There has been terrific support by the cycling community to support our vision and our events”, says Operations Director, Susan McKenzie.

LATEST NEWS

Cotter Pin’s season of events is to be launched at DISC on Monday, 8th October with Ryan Bayley and Anna Meares in attendance.  The TODAY Show will be doing six live crosses as part of the launch and they have asked for as many people to come along and be part of the fun as possible.  You’ll need to be at DISC at 6am!  Coffee and Croissants will be provided.  There will also be an opportunity to meet Anna and Ryan and get their autographs.

Tickets can be purchased from 15th October 2007 via www.ticketek.com.au.  For season ticket enquiries, email: clint@cyclingrevolution.com.au

DISC Velodrome - home to all cycles of life

If you ever wandered into the Darebin velodrome early on a winter Thursday morning, you would be excused for wondering what would possess a grown man to fly around the track at speeds over 60km/hour in an "orange coloured, peanut shaped, object", with his body only centimetres from the surface.

"I love the efficiency greatness" he says.

The man inside the peanut is 41 year old Brunswick CC member and former triathlete Tim Marquardt, a regular face at the DISC velodrome track training in his Human Powered Vehicle known as Whoops.

He is currently in training for an attempt at the Australian hour record which currently stands at 58km and says the early morning sessions at DISC over the past few months have provided him with a great tool for developing his endurance training which will make or break the attempt.

"Around the track I can maintain a steady speed of 50km/hour, which will give me with a good base for the record assault. Once I refine the bike more & have the bike as efficient as it can be, 60km in an hour should be readily achievable "

Whilst 50-60km in an hour around a track is quick by anyone's standards, it is far from the 130km/hour speeds seen on the roads by some using similar vehicles.

"The track limits your speed because of the cornering ability of the vehicle, but on a straight road these vehicles regularly go over 100km/hour." he said.

But Tim has plans for faster training. "I intend to train along side cars  on the Westgate freeway, during very early weekend hours."

Tim has owned this fully faired lowracer / streamliner HPV for 18 months now, having pieced it together from parts imported from all over the world.  He purchased the Moulds from the US and the frame was made by a local bike manufacturer, Trisled HPV's .

And why does he do it?  Its the passion for the type of cycling. And trying to do more with less.

"Whilst there are IHPVA (world governing body) championships that I could attend, they have different classes and you compete against each other.  I like the aspect of competing against time."

He also has a vision of one day having more of these types of bikes in the wider community.  "I would one day love to see these as a more regular commuting vehicle, obviously with modifications to lessen the weight, improve balance at low speed and improvements in  safety aspects."

Soon, Tim will head to the Holden proving ground, the site he will have a go at breaking the Aus Record, for more outdoors training.

And he is hoping that with success at the attempt, the publicity gained will assist him in raising the profile of HPVs and also his plans for attracting some top level Australian track cyclists to have a crack at the world hour record & flying 200m records .

But of now, its just him inside the little orange peanut flying around DISC on an early Thursday morning.

If you are interested in finding out more about Tim's assault on the record, please email him at themarqs@netspace.net.au
